Some Cloth Diaper Brands

I often get questions from people curious about our diapers. The vast array of diapers out there is overwhelming, and trying to keep track of it all will make your head spin. As always, word-of-mouth is the easiest way to get information, because you actually know the person, and can ask questions about the product. The shortcoming, of course, is that it's just one person's opinion.

So here's a synopsis of mine, or the opinions of the people around me. More detailed information about purchasing will be up eventually.

flip:
I have these.

Pros:

  • one-size, so we need to buy fewer diapers
  • easy to use - just put in an insert, or trifold
  • the cover does not have a cloth layer on the inside, so it does not collect urine smells between washes. We like to air dry the cover and reuse it and only wash it if it gets soiled.
  • they fit well on children with thunder thighs
  • there are disposable inserts available for those who like the convenience when out (I actually never used these, because it's so easy to use cloth inserts, even when out)
Cons:
  • they are mostly solid colours, so they're not as cute as they could be
  • they are rather large in the crotch, so the inserts tend to bunch - not so much of an issue with the smaller stay-dry inserts
  • the more economical bummis prefolds are a bit small for the covers, and so you have to be careful when getting the diaper on
  • they do not fit well on children with skinny legs
  • they are rather large for most newborns, even on the smallest setting - use the smaller stay-dry insert for a trimmer fit
  • the leg elastic area can chafe when the kid is between sizes because the cover then slips, and if you're not careful, the constant adjusting can rub the fabric into the groin (we help mitigate this by putting on a balm to act as a barrier)
  • plastic touches baby's skin, which may be an issue for some

MyVeryBest (etsy shop)

I have these as well
Pros
  • trim fit, so you can use the more economical bummis prefolds (she also has her own inserts at a pretty good price)
  • super cute, and customizable
  • the cloth inner layer is probably better for baby's skin
  • one-size and should fit well from newborn (just judging by the size of the smallest setting compared to that of the flips)
Cons
  • needs to clear customs, so you'll be charged a handling fee, and taxes at the border
  • long wait times
  • I am not entirely convinced that these will fit all the way to potty training (my kid is in the 85th-percentile range for weight), but will update as the time comes

GroVia Hybrids (AI2)
A friend has these
Pros (in addition to the ones in the picture)
  • trim fit
  • shell can be used as for swimming
Cons
  • not too sure

Apple Cheeks
A friend has these
Pros (in addition to the ones in the picture)

  • insert supposedly comes out in the wash, so you don't need to touch a dirty one
  • can be used as an AI2
  • trim fit, with 2 sizes for better fit

Cons

  • there are 2 sizes, so it is less budget-friendly
